Today we are featuring an interview with Sheena of Skate…
If you love handmade local artisan crafts that are unique and one of a kind, then Sew Loka is your kind of place! This quaint handmade gift shop in Bankers HIll, is truly a hidden gem! The store owner Claudia is in her own right a wonderful artisan, she began sewing at a young age of 8. She was inspired by her Dad, who worked in the denim industry and her Mom who made costumes and patterns. Being immersed in creativity from such an early age led her to catch the creative spark and being making handmade items of her own. Sew Loka was born, it’s a play on words, in Spanish Loco means crazy (thought out her childhood, her mom would comment on how crazy Claudia was) , and so when the time came for a name Sew Loka was born!
Claudia loves having her beautiful baby girl Isis around the shop, she no doubt one day she too will catch the creativity bug! Making Zipper pouches out of repurposed fabrics found both at local thrift stores as well as items simply donated by the local community is her all time favorite thing to make. The colors, patterns and vintage style fabrics she uses for her zipper pouches are a sure way to add fun to any purse! “Recycled crafting is so important because it cuts waste from our landfill and allows for improvising” , said Claudia as she showed us some thrift store clothing hanging on a rack in the back of her store. The passion she has for her craft and the community is infectious for sure, you will leave the shop, inspired!
The best part about her shop, is that not only is it a collective funnel for all of the wonderful handmade artists in San Diego, but you get to take a glimpse into a working studio, often times Claudia is in her shop measuring and cutting fabric, sewings new items and is fully immersed in the creative process, this treat of being able to see the work come to life is priceless.
“Stick with what you believe in and follow your passion and dreams, it get’s stressful and tough, but in the end it’s so fulfilling!” says Claudia. Her shop is truly a wonderful place built on a foundation of community, art and recycling, as they say one mans trash into another mans treasure. This holiday season, if you are looking for a gift for that special someone that has everything, get them something handmade and unique, that is truly one of a kind, and support local San Diego artist at the same time.
